Upward Bound - North

Hello!!! Our names are Mellori, Martha, and Gabriel. We are apart of the Upward Bound program and have been given the opportunity to experience the first-time Works-study component, in which we experience as college-bound students what the working environment is like. Our assigned work area takes place in the Chicano Resource Center at California State University, Fullerton. Here we are able to embrace Chicano history by learning about it through research and creating a web page portraying its importance.

What Is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound provides support to members in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families, high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelors degree, and low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates of participants enrolling and graduating from institutions of postsecondary education. Some services include:

·        Academic, financial, or personal counseling

·        Exposure to academic programs and cultural events

·        Tutorial services

·        Mentoring programs

·        Financial aid and scholarship information and applications

·        College-Prep classes and information

·        A six-week, on-campus, summer enrichment program

·        College campus visits

·        Career Fair and College Life Fair

What is a typical day like during the six-week summer enrichment program?
A typical day consists of getting up around 7:00 a.m. to get ready and eat breakfast.  Then, we take classes from 9:00 a.m. to 4:25 p.m.  The classes are in the areas of science, math, English, and a language.  In between classes, we have lunch and study hall.  After classes are over, we are given recreation time, dinner, and study hall.  Then it’s bedtime!

Field Trips

Every Friday, Upward Bound takes a trip to a particular college campus, museum, or beach. This summer, we took some trips to the Latin American Arts Museum in Long Beach, LA Times/KTLA, UC Santa Barbara, etc. In the past, we have taken trips to Berkeley, San Jose, Bakersfield, San Francisco, San Diego, and many more places.

*This page was created by students who participated in the Upward Bound-North Summer 2002 Work-Study Internship Program.  As part of their internship with the CRC, they were assigned to design this page to share information regarding their experiences with the Upward Bound Program-North at CSU Fullerton.
