Get Organized: Starting Your Research

How Should I Begin My Research?

First, identify your research interest. Try to formulate your research interest in the form of a question to help focus your research.

Next, brainstorm some keywords, phrases, or sentences that describe your research interest. Perhaps you are interested in tattooing. You already know that “tattoo” is a key subject in your research interest, but you know that there may be other words or related concepts to help you fully research your interest. For example:
  • Tattoo(-s, -ing)
  • Body Art
  • Body Marking
  • Piercing(-s)
You may want to narrow your research focus to a certain population and/or to a certain geographical location:

College Students Fullerton
Teens / Adolescents Orange County
Young Adults California
Adults United States

Your research interest could be stated as a phrase:

The popularity of tattoos and piercings among American college students

You might also state your research interest as a question:

Why does the number of American college students that have tattoos or piercings seem to be increasing?
