According to the American Chemical Society Guidelines for Chemical Information Retrieval, students should be able to:

bulletEfficiently locate chemical and physical properties of substances LINK, including their spectra LINK
bulletEfficiently locate references for the synthesis or reactions of desired compounds or classes of compounds LINK
bulletEfficiently locate references to a desired type of chemical transformation
bulletIdentify the CAS registry number of compounds
bulletComplete a comprehensive subject search.  Utilize CA subject indexes and Index Guide
bulletCompile a complete bibliography of an author's publications
bulletLocate recent review articles on a subject LINK
bulletUtilize a variety of methods to stay up-to-date on a subject  LINK
bulletKnow the importance of patents and be able to search for patents on a subject
bulletKnow about the availability and contents of relevant computerized databases (bibliographic and non bibliographic) and understand the basic techniques of on-line searching
