How can I tell if Pollak Library has a particular book or government document?

bullet

Search the Library Catalog by the title of the book or by the author.

What if I want to browse books or government documents at Pollak Library?

bullet

Books: Most materials in this library, with the exception of government documents, are classified and shelved by call numbers according to the Library of Congress classification system
bullet

Environmental Studies is very interdisciplinary so you won't be able to browse everything easily. Once you locate a relevant Library of Congress classification number, other relevant items will be nearby. Books are located on the 4th-6th floors of Library North.

bullet

Government Documents: Government documents are classified and shelved by government agency or department according to the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification system. To view a list of relevant government documents, search the Library Catalog by Subject: environmental and then limit to Government Documents only. This will retrieve a list of U.S., California, and International Documents. The Government Documents Collection is located on the third floor of Library North.

What books or documents does Pollak library have on my specific topic?

bullet

The Library Catalog uses Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). The Library Catalog may direct you from an incorrect to a correct LCSH, e.g., Rainforests see Rain Forests. The Library Catalog may also link you to related LCSH that you may wish to consult.
bullet

Some valid LCSH for Environmental Studies include:
bullet

Environmental sciences

bullet

Environmental protection

bullet

Hazardous wastes California Fullerton

bullet

Endangered species

bullet

Air pollution environmental aspects

bullet

If a SUBJECT search in the Library Catalog doesn't find any materials, try again using a KEYWORD search. For example, garbage disposal is not a valid LCSH, but you can find relevant titles searching by KEYWORDS, checking to see the subject headings assigned to the most relevant titles, and then searching by those subjects. Books about garbage disposal have been assigned the subject heading refuse and refuse disposal; therefore, next do a search SUBJECT: refuse and refuse disposal.

bullet

After you have a set of records on your topic, you can choose to limit your search to get more relevant results, e.g., Material Type = Maps & Atlases, Where item is located = Documents, Year of publication = After 1995.
