BOOKS, DOCUMENTS, MAPS, ETC.

How can I tell
if Pollak Library has a particular book, document, map, etc.?
Use the
Library Catalog
to search for the title of the book or the author. |
For documents
and maps, also search for:
Agency or
department as an author. Examples:
Geological
Survey U S |
California.
Division of Mines and Geology |
Series
title. Examples:
Open-file
reports |
Bulletin.
(California Division of Mines and Geology) |

What
if I want to browse books, documents, or maps at the Pollak Library?
Most
materials in this library, with the exception of government documents, are classified
and shelved by call numbers according to the Library
of Congress classification system.
The
general call number for Earth Sciences is QE and books with that
call number are located on the 4th floor of Pollak Library South.
Government
documents are classified and shelved by government agency or department according to
the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification system. Once you
have located an agency or department as an author in the Library Catalog you will be able to
browse documents authored by that agency on the third floor of Pollak Library North.

What books, documents, maps, etc.
does Pollak library have on my particular topic?
The Library
Catalog uses Library of
Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). The Library Catalog may direct you from an incorrect to a
correct LCSH, e.g., Tectonophysics see Geodynamics. The Library
Catalog may also
link you to related LCSH that you may wish to consult.
Some valid LCSH for
Geology include:
Petrofabric
analysis
Water
quality, California
Geochemical
prospecting
Geology--
Remote sensing
If a subject search in the
Library Catalog doesn't find any materials, try again using a keyword search. This may find
you some relevant materials, and you can then figure out what the correct subjects are
and search again to find everything on that topic. |
After
you have a set of records on your topic, you can choose to limit your search to get
more relevant results, e.g., Material Type = Maps & Atlases, Where item is located
= Documents
