Use of footnotes

Scholarly works of history are usually extensively footnoted.

Footnotes allow readers to check an author's facts for accuracy, make sure a quotation hasn't been pulled out of context, and, in general, know where an author got his/her information.

Works with few or no footnotes are unlikely to be scholarly.
