Scaffolding: The Outline

For many people, outlining suggests something complicated with lots of letters and Roman numerals.

But most writers use simple outlining techniques--perhaps a series of short sentences or phrases--to order their thoughts before writing.

Keep in mind that the outline is more like a rough sketch than an exact blueprint. You are very likely to rearrange it as you begin to write.
