Brown
crystallized southern resistance to racial change, which--from at least the
time of Harry S. Truman's civil rights proposals in 1948--had been scattered
and episodic. The unification of southern racial intransigence, which became
known as massive resistance, propelled politics in virtually every southern
state several notches to the right on racial issues; Brown temporarily destoyed
southern racial moderation. In this extremist political environment, men who
were unswervingly committed to preservation of the racial status quo were
catapulted into office.
_______Brown
had
the effect of bringing pro-segregation Southerners together effectively for
the first time since Truman's 1948 civil right proposals. The decision sparked
a resistance movement which brought many right-wing southern politicians to
power because of their opposition to racial change.
_________Although
there had been some scattered and episodic resistance from the time of Harry
Truman's civil rights proposals in 1948, it was the Brown decision that crystallized
southern resistance to racial change. Brown destoyed southern racial moderation
at the same time as it unified southern racial intransigence, known as massive
resistance. Because of the extremist political environment, politics in virtually
every southern state moved to the right on racial issues and elections went
to men who were unswervingly committed to preservation of the racial status
quo.
_______Brown
crystallized southern resistance to racial change that had previously been scattered
and episodic. The massive resistance propelled politics in almost every southern
state to the right on racial issues. Brown temporarily destoyed southern racial
moderation. In this environment, men who were committed to preservation of the
racial status quo were voted into office.
