Radio-TV-Film: Library Research Guide

Main Page

Books in Pollak Library are located on the 4th, 5th, & 6th floors of the South Wing.  Books are arranged on the shelves by Library of Congress call numbers.  These call numbers do a valuable service: they group books on similar subjects together on the shelf.  For example, all the books on radio broadcasting will be near each other.  Here are some of the most popular call numbers for RTVF-related subjects:

TK 6550             Radio
TK 6630             Television
HE 8689-8700   Broadcasting & Telecomm in general
PN 1994             Film (Motion Pictures)
QA 76.575          Multimedia (computer)

While randomly browsing books on the shelf might be interesting, its not effective when you need to find a specific book.  To do that, use the library's online catalog to look up a book.  Then you'll be able to find the Call number so you can find exactly where you book is located.   You can search the online catalog different ways:

by SUBJECT
example: television advertising

by KEYWORD(S)
example: censorship FCC

and by AUTHOR, TITLE, CALL#

What if CSUF doesn't own a book you want (or on a topic you want)...or if the book is checked out to someone elese?  No problem.  You have options:

The Recall button

Clicking the "Recall" button at the book's online catalog record will cause an email to be sent to the person with the book, requiring them to finish and return it within 10 days

Find-books-at-another-library

Clicking "Find Books" at the library's homepage, then clicking "WordCat", will let you search a powerful worldwide catalog that will show you other, nearby libraries that might have the book (for example, Fullerton Public Library)

Interlibrary Loan If no local libraries have your book, you can still get it by ordering it via Interlibrary loan.  This is a free service, and books arrive in usually 3-5 days.
