        TESOL: Library Research Guide

Main Page

You will find regular TESOL-related books in the CSUF Library on the 4th, 5th, & 6th floors of the South Wing.   You will find Reference TESOL books (encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.) on the Reference floor (1st, North).

Books are arranged on the shelves by Library of Congress call numbers.  These call numbers do a valuable service: they group books on similar subjects together on the shelf.  For example, all the books on Sociolinguistics will be near each other.   Here are some common call numbers ranges for TESOL-related subjects (in no particular order):

PE 1128               TESOL
PE 1106, 1112    Grammar
PE 1137             Pronunciation
PE 1065            Teaching English (in general)
PE 1460            Idioms
PE 3721               Slang
P 35-121           Linguistics
P 40                   Sociolinguistics
P 37                  Psycholinguistics
P 118                Language Acquisition
P 215-240         Phonology, Phonetics
P 241-258         Morphology
P 302                Discourse Analysis
LB 1576            Teaching English (Elementary Ed.)
LC 3701-3740    Bilingual Education

While randomly browsing books on the shelf might be interesting, its not effective when you need to find a specific book.  To do that, use the library's online catalog to look up a book.  Then you'll be able to find the Call number so you can find exactly where you book is located.   You can search OPAC different ways:

bulletby official SUBJECT
examples: English language grammar
               Linguistics
               Bilingualism

bulletby random KEYWORD
examples: activities and English and speaking
               pronunciation and accent
               lessons and ESL

bulletand by author, title, or call#...if you know them

(click here if you'd like to link directly to the online catalog now)

horizontal rule

The online catalog doesn't use acronymns (TESOL, ESL, EFL, etc.) as official subjects.  The official subject for the overall field of teaching English to non-English speakers is:
English Language Study and Teaching Foreign Speakers

And by the way, don't forget you can also find really useful items among the regular (non-ESL) English teaching books.  The official subject for that is:
English Language Study and Teaching
